Ponstel (Mefenamic Acid)

Ponstel is used for treating menstrual pain. It may be used for short term (not more than 7 days) treatment of mild to moderate pain. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Use Ponstel as directed by your doctor.

• Take Ponstel by mouth. It may be taken with food if it upsets your stomach. Taking it with food may not lower the risk of stomach or bowel problems (e.g., bleeding, ulcers). Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you have persistent stomach upset.
• Take Ponstel with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL) as directed by your doctor.

Ponstel is an NSAID. Exactly how it works is not known. It may block certain substances in the body that are linked to inflammation. NSAIDs treat the symptoms of pain and inflammation. They do not treat the disease that causes those symptoms.

If you miss a dose of Ponstel and you are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Store Ponstel at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Ponstel out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Do not use Ponstel if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Ponstel;
• you have had a severe allergic reaction (e.g., severe rash, hives, trouble breathing, growths in the nose, dizziness) to aspirin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) (e.g., ibuprofen, celecoxib);
• you have recently had or will be having bypass heart surgery;
• you have kidney problems, ulcers, or inflammation of the stomach or bowel;
• you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy .

• Ponstel may cause dizziness or drowsiness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Ponstel with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
• Serious stomach ulcers or bleeding can occur with the use of Ponstel . Taking it in high doses or for a long time, smoking, or drinking alcohol increases the risk of these side effects. Taking Ponstel with food will not reduce the risk of these effects. Contact your doctor or emergency room at once if you develop severe stomach or back pain; black, tarry stools; vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds; or unusual weight gain or swelling.
• Do not take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
• Ponstel is an NSAID. Before you start any new medicine, check the label to see if it has an NSAID (e.g., ibuprofen) in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
• Do not take aspirin while you are using Ponstel unless your doctor tells you to.
• Ponstel may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know that you take Ponstel.
• Lab tests, including kidney function, complete blood cell counts, and blood pressure, may be performed while you use Ponstel . These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Use Ponstel with caution in the elderly; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially stomach bleeding and kidney problems.
• Ponstel should be used with extreme caution in children younger than 14 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
• Ponstel may cause harm to the fetus. Do not use it during the last 3 months of pregnancy. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Ponstel while you are pregnant. Ponstel is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Ponstel.

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome:

• constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; gas; headache; heartburn; nausea; stomach upset.

• severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; trouble breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody or black, tarry stools; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; depression; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; mental or mood changes; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe headache or dizziness; severe or persistent stomach pain or nausea; severe vomiting; shortness of breath; sudden or unexplained weight gain; swelling of hands, legs, or feet; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual joint or muscle pain; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision or speech changes; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Ponstel is to be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not share it with other people.
If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.

 Starting my teenage years I was suffering from my skin problems. I felt insecure and depressed. I tried alomost everything. What is Ponstel (mefenamic acid)?

Mefenamic acid is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Mefenamic acid works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Mefenamic acid is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by arthritis. It is also used to treat menstrual pain.

Mefenamic acid may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about Ponstel (mefenamic acid)?

This medicine can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems, including heart attack or stroke. Do not use this medicine just before or after having heart bypass surgery (also called coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Seek emergency medical help if you have symptoms of heart or circulation problems, such as chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance.

This medicine can also increase your risk of serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and gastrointestinal effects can occur without warning at any time while you are taking mefenamic acid. Older adults may have an even greater risk of these serious gastrointestinal side effects.

Call your doctor at once if you have symptoms of bleeding in your stomach or intestines. This includes black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Ponstel (mefenamic acid)?

Taking an NSAID can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems, including heart attack or stroke. This risk will increase the longer you use an NSAID. Do not use this medicine just before or after having heart bypass surgery (also called coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take this medicine.

How should I take Ponstel (mefenamic acid)?

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

If you take mefenamic acid for a long period of time, your doctor may want to check you on a regular basis to make sure this medication is not causing harmful effects. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What should I avoid while taking Ponstel (mefenamic acid)?

Ponstel (mefenamic acid) side effects

• chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance;

• black, bloody, or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;

• urinating less than usual or not at all;

• pain, burning, or bleeding when you urinate;

• nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);

• fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; or

• bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness.

Less serious side effects may include:

• upset stomach, mild heartburn or stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation; bloating, gas;

• dizziness, headache, nervousness;

• skin itching or rash;

• dry mouth;

• increased sweating, runny nose;

• blurred vision; or

• ringing in your ears.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.

What other drugs will affect Ponstel (mefenamic acid)?

Tell your doctor if you are taking an antidepressant such as citalopram (Celexa), duloxetine (Cymbalta), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem, Symbyax), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), or venlafaxine (Effexor). Taking any of these drugs with mefenamic acid may cause you to bruise or bleed easily.

Before taking mefenamic acid, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:

• a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin;

• a diuretic (water pill) such as furosemide (Lasix);

• cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune);

• lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid);

• methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall);

• steroids (prednisone and others); or

• aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), fenoprofen (Nalfon), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis), ketorolac (Toradol), meclofenamate (Meclomen), meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), piroxicam (Feldene), and others.

This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with mefenamic acid. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
